An Ohio billionaire, Larry Connor, plans to dive to the Titanic’s depth in a new submersible to show that deep-sea exploration can be safe, even after the OceanGate disaster. Connor and Triton Submarines co-founder Patrick Lahey will descend 12,400 feet in a $20 million vessel called the Triton 4000/2 Abyssal Explorer. They aim to prove such trips can be done safely, despite the Titan submersible’s catastrophic implosion last June, which killed five people, including OceanGate’s CEO. Lahey, who criticized OceanGate’s safety standards, designed the new sub, which Connor believes can repeatedly and safely reach Titanic depths. They have not announced the date of their voyage.
